EPIK invites responsible, enthusiastic native speakers of English who will invest their time to enrich their lives and build a professional teaching career while sharing knowledge and culture with students and teachers of Korea.
1. PROGRAMME DESCRIPTION
Successful applicants will be required to conduct English conversation classes for Korean primary and secondary school students as part of the Korean government's programme to promote and strengthen English language education. Candidates should have a strong sense of creativity and motivation and enjoy working with young children as part of an academic team. Successful applicants are expected to focus on the development of oral communication skills using interactive teaching methods.
2. ELIGIBILITY
Applicants must:
Have completed two full academic years or more at an accredited college or university.
Be a citizen of a country where the primary language is English.
*Canadian citizens from the Quebec Province and countries where English is a co-official language and/or applicants from non-English language backgrounds whose first language is not English must have been taught in English-language schools from junior high school through to university level.
*Ethnic Korean applicants with foreign citizenship or legal residency must have been taught in English-language schools from junior high school onwards and have lived abroad for minimum of 10 years. (If you are a male citizen of the Republic of Korea under the age of 35, you must have either completed mandatory military service or have received an official waiver.)
Be fluent and proficient in the grammar and structure of the English language and be able to
communicate fluently with clear and distinct pronunciation.
Be mentally and physically capable of performing the specified responsibilities and duties. Must
also have the ability and willingness to adapt to Korean culture and living.
Meet the criteria of eligibility for an E2 (work) visa as required by the Korean Immigration
Authority.
* Applicants aged 55 or over (As of 2008. 12. 31) may be excluded from selection due to the purpose and the aim of EPIK.
3. DUTIES AND PLACEMENT
A: Duties
The duties of the Guest English Teacher (hereinafter "GET") are carried out under the guidance of the supervisor designated by the Provincial Office of Education (hereinafter "POE").
The responsibilities and duties include but are not limited to:
- Conducting English classes in cooperation with Korean homeroom or English language teachers.
- Preparing teaching materials and activities for English language education.
- Assisting with the development of teaching materials related to English language education.
- Assisting with activities related to English language education and other extracurricular activities. (Judging English speech contestants, voice recording for English listening comprehension tests, conducting English conversation classes in the English camp, etc.)
B: Place of Work
The POE will decide placements accordingly. Participants will work at primary and secondary schools within the POE, but some may be designated to work at other educational facilities within the POE system.
Rejection of placement may result in disqualification from the programme.
C: Placement Quota for Each POE

4. CONTRACT TERM AND OTHER CONDITIONS
The term of the contract is 52 weeks (Sep 1, 2008 ~ Aug 30, 2009).
The GETs shall work 8 hours per day, 5 calendar days per week excluding Saturdays, Sundays and national holidays (approx. 14 days) of the Republic of Korea . The work hours of GETs may follow the normal work schedule of Korean teachers.
Actual class instruction hours of GETs shall not exceed 22 hours per week. (If it exceeds 22 hours, GETs will be entitled to supplementary class instruction pay). The person in charge of the work place may require GETs to work overtime in addition to normal workdays and work hours. In this case, overtime pay will be provided.
5. ELIGIBILITY & REMUNERATION

* The amount of provincial pay varies according to special rural allowance and multiple school teaching allowance.
6. BENEFITS
A. Accommodation
A single leased house (apartment or studio-type room) as well as some basic household items will be provided by the POE. Any and all fees, charges, costs, taxes, expenses, etc. incurred in using the apartment shall be borne By the GET. GETs can choose to receive housing allowance of 400,000 won per month instead of the accommodation.
B. Entrance, Exit and Renewal Allowance
- Entrance Allowance: Within the first month of the contract, all EPIK GETs, regardless of level, will be provided with 1,300,000 KRW of Entrance Allowance.
(To prevent early termination of contracts, Entrance Allowance is issued as a form of a loan from the employer to the EPIK GET. In the event that the contract is terminated with six (6) months of its implementation, including renewal contracts, regardless of course or grounds, the EPIK GET will repay the above-mentioned loan to the EPIK office immediately.)
- Exit Allowance: 1,300,000 KRW is provided upon successful completion of the 1 year contract and when the contract is not renewed.
- Renewal Allowance: 2,000,000 KRW will be provided upon successful completion and renewal of your contract.
C. Vacation and Paid Leaves
(1) Paid Leave:
A total of 21 calendar days will be provided as official vacation days with agreement from POE. GETs working in a school system shall take the leave up to 10 calendar days during the summer and 11 calendar days during the winter recess. A request for a leave should be submitted and approved by POE at least fifteen (15) days in advance.
(2) Special Leave:
GETs may take a special leave of absence for a number of days (inclusive of national holidays, Saturday and Sunday) as set forth below for each of the following events;
- Seven (7) calendar days for Employee's marriage.
- Seven (7) calendar days for the death of Employee's parent or spouse
- Three (3) calendar days for the death of Employee's child
- In case of a female Employee, up to ninety (90) calendar days for a maternity leave.
Special leaves specified in items 1 and 2 are available with pay. However, maternity leave shall be available with pay for only the first sixty days.
(3) Sick Leave:
Fifteen (15) calendar days per contract (If the one-time sick leave duration lasts for more than 7 days, a medical report will be required, if for more than 15 days, it will be considered as non-paid leave).
E. Other Benefits
(1) A settlement allowance of 300,000 Korean won will be provided for the first year. In case of the termination of contract within six (6) months, regardless of course or ground therefore, GET shall immediately pay back the POE the fore mentioned allowance.
(2) POE will provide GET with half of the medical insurance pursuant to the National Medical Insurance Act of Korea. In the event GET has his/her family living with him or her in Korea, POE will also provide and pay for medical insurance premium for the GET's family.
(3) POE will provide employee with half of the national pension plan deduction (approximately 4.5% of salary) pursuant to the National Pension Corporation Act of Korea. American or Canadian GETs are eligible for a pension distribution refund if he/she submits the required documents to the Korean National Pension Corporation when he/she leaves Korea after the completion of his/her contract.
(4) POE shall be entitled to severance pay GET, equivalent to approximately one month salary, upon successful completion of each one-year contract.
(5) GET working in remote areas (as designated by POE) may be eligible for a special rural allowance of 100,000 Korean Won (KRW) per month.
(6) Employees working for more than one school are eligible for a multiple school teaching allowance of 100,000 Korean Won (KRW) for two schools or 150,000 KRW for three schools per month.
7. APPLICATION
A. Required Documents
All applicants will be required to submit the following documents:
- A completed application form (including one passport size photo)
- A personal essay (minimum 300 words)
- Personal medical assessment
- One signed and sealed recommendation letter from a professor or a former employer
(email printout or a copy not accepted)
- An copy of your diploma (must have an ¡®Apostille number and the stamp')
* show the original diploma at the Korean Consulate/Embassy
- Two original sealed transcripts:
* 1 sealed transcript to take with you to the Korean Consulate/Embassy when you apply for the E2 visa.
- Criminal record check (must have an ¡®Apostille number and the stamp')
- Copy of passport photo page
- (If applicable) Copies of certification (teacher certificate, TESOL, etc)
- (If applicable) Proof of teaching/work experience (for details, refer to FAQ)
- Copy of citizenship or a copy of legal residence certificate (for Korean nationals)
If English is not your first language (born in a non-English speaking country), then you must be able to provide proof of English education beginning from junior high school level.
Official medical report
* Medical tests must be done in Korea after arrival at a hospital/medical clinic designated by the Korean Immigration Office. The original copy should be submitted to the Korean immigration office when applying for an alien registration card and a copy should be submitted to the POE(Provincial Office of Education).
¡Ø IMPORTANT : If an EPIK GET does not submit an official medical report or is found to be addicted to drugs/alcohol or infected with HIV/contagious diseases, the contract will be cancelled and must return to his/her home country. In that case, all expenses for entry, departure, and stay in Korea , including medical fees, will be borne by the EPIK GET.
Please send us an extra copy of all of your documents except for the sealed recommendation letter and the sealed transcript.

The ¡® TaLK (Teach & Learn in Korea) ' program is inviting adventurous global leaders to teach English to students and to experience and learn about Korean culture . Sponsored by the Korean Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, ¡® TaLK ' will sponsor individuals interested in gaining personal and professional enrichment through teaching and learning in Korea. The program is open to citizens of countries where English is the national language. We are seeking approximately 250 TaLK scholars and will consider up to 40 applicants on the waiting list.
Participants will receive Korean government scholarships and teach English in after-school classes of Korean elementary schools while enjoying cultural programs during their free time. Recipients will be placed at schools in rural areas in need of greater exposure to English and teach the language by forming one-on-one working relationships with Korean university student volunteers. Candidates should have a desire to work with children, have a service-centered mind, a willingness to work in rural areas, and have consideration for others with a positive attitude.

Applicants must:
- Be a citizen of a country where the national language is English.
(i.e. Australia , Canada , New Zealand , U.K. , U.S.A. , Ireland , and South Africa ).
* Ethnic Koreans with legal residencies are eligible also.
-Have completed two or more years of education at an accredited university,
or graduated from an accredited college in the countries aforementioned.
* Ethnic Koreans who are in their 1st or 2nd year of college/university are eligible also.
* University graduates and graduate school students are eligible also.
- Be mentally and physically capable of performing the specified responsibilities and duties.
- Have the ability and willingness to adapt to Korean lifestyle and culture.
- Be able to communicate in English fluently with clear and distinct pronunciation.
-Meet the criteria of eligibility for E-2(Foreign Language Instructor), F-4(Overseas Koreans), or F-2(Spouse of Korean national) visa set forth by the Korean Immigration Authority.
¡Ø Preference will be given to the following candidates;
- have or will have a degree in education, English or subjects related to Korea .
- have excellent school records including good command of English.
- have completed primary and secondary education in the countries aforementioned.
¡Ø Instructions for applicants
- Any male with Korean citizenship who has not fulfilled his military duty or received an official waiver must choose the six months contract term.
- After arriving in Korea , you must undergo a medical check-up at a designated hospital, and if the test results determine that you have serious disease(s) which are infectious or may keep you from performing your duties (e.g. drug addiction, AIDS), your scholarship will be cancelled and you must return to your home country at your own expense .
- TaLK scholars are not permitted to have additional employment (including a part-time job) except working as a TaLK scholar. |

The duties of the TaLK scholarship recipients are carried out under the guidance of the supervisor designated by Provincial Office of Education (hereinafter "POE"). Duties include :
- Working for the designated elementary schools in rural areas in Korea
-Teaching English in after-school classes* : 15 hours per week
*This is after receiving theories and practices concerning English teaching methodology and classroom management at the four-week preparatory orientation.
TaLK scholars may form a co-teaching arrangement with a Korean university student volunteer or with the class teacher.
TaLK scholars are recommended to participate in the activities organized by the school, the POE, and the community

A: Contract term
The contract terms are for the duration of either 6-months or one-year, starting February 2009.
¨ç February, 2009 ? July, 2009 (six months)
¨è February, 2009 ? January, 2010 (one year)
TaLK scholars will teach 15 hours per week from Monday to Friday (e.g. 5 days a week) and are not required to work on Saturdays, Sundays, or national holidays of the Republic of Korea.
B: Place of work
- The POE will decide placements. Participants will work at elementary schools within the POE.
- Rejection of placement may result in disqualification from the program.

A. Monthly allowance : 1,500,000 KRW (approximately, 1,300 USD)
* Payment of monthly allowance begins in March 2009.
*During the preparatory orientation in February, board & lodging is provided instead of monthly allowance.
B. Accommodation :
- The POE will decide the type of accommodation for each scholar.
¡Ø Possible accommodation: a dormitory, an apartment, or a studio-type room, or a home-stay
-If a scholar does not wish the POE to provide accommodation, he/she will also be given monthly housing settlement (400,000KRW) instead.
¡Ø Any and all fees, charges, costs, taxes, expenses, etc. incurred from the accommodation provided, shall be borne by scholarship recipients.
C. Round-trip airfare
-A one-way economy class airfare of the most direct one-way flight available from the international airport nearest your place of residence to Incheon Airport and a return air ticket at the completion of your contract term entitlement
-If your scholarship is cancelled during the contract term, a return air ticket will not be provided.
- Transportation from Incheon Airport to the orientation venue will be arranged.
D. Health insurance cover
- POE will cover your health insurance with its contracted agency.
- Method of use : TaLK scholars must pay for their medical treatment on their own, and then
receive reimbursement one week or two after submitting reimbursement application and
original receipt.
E. One-off settlement allowance
- 300,000KRW will be given soon after being placed in the designated school.
F. Opportunities to participate in cultural programs
-A variety of programs to experience Korean culture will be offered under the supervision of the POE during the weekends and in scholar's available free time.
G. Korean language acquisition
- Opportunities to learn Korean will be offered (e.g. lessons organized by the POE, on-line lessons on the Internet, conversations with the Korean university student partner, etc.).
H. Distinction & personal enrichment
-As a Korean Government Scholar, you will distinguish yourself as an individual with a unique and profound interest in teaching while enhancing your personal and professional com- petence.
-After a successful completion of your contract term, you will be awarded "A Korean Government Scholarship Certificate."
I. Other benefits
- Preparatory Orientation is held for four weeks upon arrival to Korea and before being placed in schools. Examples of workshops to attend: teaching & learning methodology, understanding Korean lifestyle and culture, theories and practices for classroom management.

2. Interview will be conducted at the Korean Embassy/Consulate-General
*After you submit your on-line application, the Korean Embassy/Consulate-General in your place of residence will contact you to arrange your interview schedule.
3. Submission of documents: all the required documents ( ¨ç ~ ¨è , ¨ê ~ ¨ð as stated in 6.A.) must be sent to the Korean Embassy / Consulate-General in your home country by mail or in person by November 28, 2008.

¡Ø The final decision is made by the TaLK Office. Although your records may meet
the minimum criteria for admission, your application may not be successful if your file is not competitive with the rest of the applicant pool. Therefore, the TaLK office will not respond to any inquiries regarding unsuccessful applications.

6. Receive an invitation letter and a contract (.pdf file) from the TaLK Office by email.
